In honor of Independence Day, I thought it would be appropriate to share this article that was written by Kathleen Yetman, Interdependence Day: Food in the Family. It beautifully details what I and clearly many others believe celebrating the 4th of July is all about. Family traditions and recipes for simple things like burgers on the grill, ”home made” potato salad and for the lucky ones like Kathleen, ”home made” ice cream. This article is a great reminder of the importance in embracing history, traditions and time, the one thing that we cannot reproduce, rework and remake.
This 4th of July, embrace the holiday, (we have so very few days that we consider ” days off”). Really relax, get outside if you can and treasure this time with friends, family or what is sometimes better – solitude. There are many people across this country that are without electricity or water, fuel and certainly internet due to recent weather events. For those of us to be graced with only the worries of “what to eat” at our BBQ, let us be thankful, humbled and helpful to those that we can reach out to. Happy fourth of July!
