Saveur Magazine published their list of 20 Great American bread bakeries in their May issue with some wonderful praise for bread artisans out of California. (Yes, you read that correctly!) It was great to see this list include more bakeries outside of the traditional NYC locations which have been always known for their breads, pizza and bagels. Bread is one of the most simple and yet challenging foods to perfect and thus requires a true artisan who is dedicated to the art and the craft of baking it with perfection. Milo & Olive’s, one of the featured artisans in the “Top 20” can easily give any NY bakery a “run for their money.”
This incredible bakery, pizzeria and now eatery is the invention of a husband and wife team, also known for their other “hobbies” which entail running the “Rustic Canyon” and the “Sweet Rose Creamery” (all located in Santa Monica, CA). Their selections include classics and a few twists on the traditional “French baguette”. You can enjoy everything from a “Country Boule” to “Lemon & Thyme bread” and even homemade bagels with “Plugra butter” (European hand churned butter).
If you visit their website, http://www.miloandolive.com, please ensure you are not hungry. The food looks breathetaking and can convince a full stomach that it’s in need of some “crostini” or a “sticky bun” almost instantly. Milo & Olive’s is a reminder that well made foods that are crafted with fresh ingredients can never be “bad for you”, not even bread.
