Egg|Plant: Supplying and Inspiring Urban Farmers

If you have ever tried growing your own food, canning, making cheese or brewing beer, you know the satisfaction that comes from growing it, making it, or raising it yourself. For anyone who wants to get involved, the question might be: how do I start?

Whether you are a beginner or experienced at planting seeds and making yogurt, Egg|Plant Urban Farm Supply is the place to go in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. They carry books, supplies, and offer classes for going back to the land without leaving the city.

Egg|Plant’s owner Audrey Matson grew up on a farm and always thought she would have a farm of her own one day. Instead, she found her niche growing food in her St Paul Minnesota back yard. She realized that she didn’t have to give up the benefits of good schools for her kids, easy access to coffee shops, and cultural events in order to grow her own food, tap maple trees, and collect fresh eggs from her chickens. She studied agriculture and horticulture and worked for garden suppliers before looking for a place that provided supplies and resources for the many aspects of urban farming. When she didn’t find such a store, she decided to open one herself.

Wondering what it takes to keep chickens in your back yard? Egg|Plant has books on  the subject, carries chicken feed, and even sells chicks which arrive in April ready for new homes. Egg|Plant also offers classes for aspiring chicken owners. Maybe you’re not ready for animals, but you’d love to plant and harvest something yourself? Egg|Plant has heirloom seeds, tools and composters for growing in your backyard. In the summer they sell fruit and veggie seedlings ready to plant where your lawn used to be as well as containers for planting if you don’t have space in the ground.

When you want to preserve the bounty of your own garden or fresh produce from the farmer’s market Egg|Plant has the cookbooks and supplies for canning and fermenting, including crocks and the beautiful Weck jars with reusable glass lids. You can also find everything you need to tap your own maple trees and make a wide variety of cheeses. It is a great resources to have so many of the components of urban farming in one place. The store is  great for beginners, but also provides information and supplies for those who wish to go deeper into do-it-yourself sustainable urban living.

In the year since the shop opened, Audrey has had many regular customers. Sometimes they bring their friends and new people come in all the time, too. More and more people in cities are craving a connection to their food and making things from scratch. Egg|Plant makes it possible to enjoy the benefits of living in an urban or suburban area without giving up home grown and home made.

Anna Hewitt

Whether sewing, planting seeds, or in the kitchen, Anna loves to create. She spends lots of time in the kitchen making as much as possible from scratch. When not baking, canning, or fermenting, she sews bags, aprons, and other items inspired by the kitchen and the garden (www.seedlingdesign.net). She often feels torn between finding some land to put down roots and taking the opportunity to travel and see more of the world. For now she eagerly explores her new surroundings in the mid-west and schemes about how to see more. Anna writes and shares recipes on her blog (roadtothefarm.blogspot.com).
